January 3, 2018– The San Diego Fermentation Festival is excited to announce this year’s beneficiary to be Coastal Roots Farm!
Coastal Roots Farm is a nonprofit community farm and education center in Encinitas. We cultivate healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom.
Coastal Roots Farm provides dignified access to fresh food for those who need it most. Inspired by Jewish agricultural practices, we grow organic crops and share the harvest with our community through pay-what-you-can farm stands, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, and direct donations to local hunger relief organizations. Since inception, the Farm has distributed over 89,700 pounds of fresh, organic produce valued at more than $366,000 to over 104,110 food-insecure individuals. This year, at least 36,000 individuals will receive the Farm’s organic produce and will also have access to resources on preparing, storing, and cooking the produce.
Through workshops, field trips, agricultural festivals, and community events, the Farm offers hands-on education and invites its neighbors to connect to the land and each other. Since Farm programming began, over 10,000 people have joined us for these activities!
